license renewal

The renewal period for 2025 is now open! The online renewal system is open from November 1 to March 31 each year. A $50 late penalty will be assessed to those renewing after January 31.

Beginning February 1, 2025, we are transitioning to a new Licensing and Enforcement system. License renewal will be done online via the new system. Please read the following information before accessing the gateway:

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE IN THE NEW SYSTEM:

  • Every applicant or licensee must create an account.  All transactions will be processed through one account.  The account will contain all licenses, permits and corporations linked to the account holder.  Everything will be renewed via this account.
  • The new system will only accept credit or debit card payments.  Cash or paper checks will no longer be accepted after February 1.  Practices paying for their employees’ renewals will need to use a company credit card or reimburse their employees for fees.
  • All correspondence will be done in the system via email only. Your email address must always be up to date to avoid missing important notices and reminders.  There can only be one personal, and one business email attached to each account.
  • Future Continuing Education audits will be done randomly on the fly.  Waiting until the deadline to renew may result in delays or penalties if you get selected for audit.  You are urged to renew early enough to allow time for audits to be approved before deadlines.
  • Receipts and certificates may be accessed and printed directly from the system.  License verifications, name change requests, and duplicates may be requested directly in the system.
  • Documents uploaded through the system or sent to the office may take up to a week to process and show up in the portal.  Please refrain from asking about documents that have not had time to complete processing.
  • Expired licenses may be reinstated via the new system. Reinstatement applications are available for all expired licenses.

Dental/Dental Hygiene License Renewal & Reinstatement

Online renewal is available from November 1st to March 31st of each year. Licensees may use the online system to update their contact information throughout the year.

General Information
  • All licensed dentists and dental hygienists must renew their licenses annually. The law requires renewal with proper payment by January 1 of each year, but licenses may be renewed until January 31st without penalty fee for renewal of any license. After January 31st, the Board is required to charge a $50.00 penalty fee for renewal of any license. This penalty fee may not be waived by the Board.

  • All licenses that are not renewed by March 31 become void and continuing to practice without a valid renewal certificate is a Class I misdemeanor. Each day's violation is a separate offense.

  • Renewal fees for 2025 are $329.00 for dentists and $106.00 for hygienists

  • If you hold a DEA license and prescribing privileges in North Carolina, there are extra requirements for renewal. You must have taken a course including at least one hour on the prescribing of opioids, and you must be registered with the NC Controlled Substance Reporting System. Info on both of these requirements may be found on our What's New page.

  • Licenses not renewed by March 31 must be reinstated by the Board. Reinstatement involves submitting an application and paying a reinstatement fee ($225 for dentists; $60 for dental hygienists) along with the current year's renewal fee.

Anesthesia/Sedation Permit Renewal & Reinstatement

General Information
  • All anesthesia and sedation permits must be renewed annually. Permits may be renewed until January 31st without penalty fee. After January 31st, there is a $50.00 late fee for renewal of any permit that may not be waived.

  • All permits that are not renewed by March 31 become void and continuing to administer anesthesia or sedation without a valid renewal certificate may result in disciplinary actions by the Board.

  • Renewal fees for 2025 are $100.00 for both anesthesia and sedation permits.
  • Recent rules changes may have affected your requirements for renewal. Please review the rules before renewing to insure that you comply with the requirements.
  • Permits not renewed by March 31 must be reinstated by the Board. Reinstatement involves submitting an application and paying a $50.00 late fee along with the current year's renewal fee.
